For this year’s Halloween celebration, we challenged our B2 and C1 students of English to write a microstory. But the challenge came with a twist: their stories had to include an inversion and some words typically associated with Halloween, just to spice things up a bit.

What exactly is an inversion? It’s a stylistic feature of English whereby an adverbial is placed at the beginning of a sentence, followed by an inversion of the subject/verb structure. Here are two examples from our Halloween stories:

• Never had I seen anything so strange.
• Little did I know I would end up lost in a deserted train station.

Có motivo de Halloween, démoslle ao noso alumnado o reto de escribir unha historia breve de medo, mais cunha condición: debían incluír unha inversión e algúns términos típicamente asociados ao tema de Halloween, para facelo máis terrorífico.
